Hershel “Woody” Williams, Medal of Honor
“The Cause is Greater than I...”Woody Williams
During the Battle of Iwo Jima, in the face of powerful enemy resistance, Marine Cpl. Hershel “Woody” Williams displayed “valiant devotion to duty” and service above self as he “enabled his company to reach its objective.” He received the Medal of Honor on October 5, 1945, and spent the rest of his life serving veterans and their families.
Woody was the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient of World War II. He passed away on June 29, 2022, at age 98, at the VA medical center in Huntington, West Virginia, that bears his name. On July 14, 2022, he lay in honor in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
His legacy lives on through the Woody Williams Foundation, which he founded to honor and serve Gold Star families, including through Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments in communities across the country. MFO USA is proud to have worked with his grandson, Chad Graham, who led the foundation as President and CEO and continues to serve on its board.
